This simply means you are paying attention to the present – thinking about the present and taking time to observe your thoughts. It requires a helicopter perspective, observing yourself from a distance, but without judging your thoughts or feelings and without thinking of them as good or bad. It does not allow you to criticize yourself.
Instead of letting your life pass you by and you becoming an observer, mindfulness means living in the moment, and being aware of your surroundings and therefore allowing yourself to be in, and to experience the moment.
Mindfulness allows for a calmer, more conscious sense of self. It is a very practical tool that leads to moments of perception and awareness and ultimately, happiness.
